Paver Patios, Walkways & Driveways
Covington hardscapes have to manage more than foot traffic. Driveway connections, existing grade and where runoff can move all affect the build. We plan the base and drainage around those conditions before the first paver is set.

PAVER PATIOS
Give the Patio a Job Before Choosing the Pattern
A patio should make the yard easier to use. We size the space around dining, seating, grill clearance and the routes people actually take from the house to the yard.
That planning also leaves room for future features. A seat wall, fire table or lighting conduit is easier to account for before the base is built.
Under the surface, excavation depth, compaction and water movement matter as much as the paver itself. The goal is a finished patio that stays level and drains where it should.

WALKWAYS AND DRIVEWAYS
Connect the Front of the Property Before You Fill the Backyard
A paver driveway often controls how the rest of the front yard works. Its width, street connection and drainage can influence walkway placement, planting beds and future hardscape phases.
Walkways solve a different problem. They create a dry, defined route between entries, parking, side yards and outdoor living areas.
Paver walkways
Direct routes between the driveway, doors, gates and patio.
Paver driveways
Vehicle-rated pavers over a base built for heavier loads.

RETAINING WALLS
Hold the Grade Where the Yard Needs More Level Space
Retaining walls can create a flatter patio area, support a driveway edge or separate usable lawn from a slope. The wall has to be planned with the load behind it, not just the exposed height you see from the yard.
Covington generally does not require a building permit for a retaining wall that is no more than four feet high, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless it supports a surcharge. A driveway, sloped soil or nearby structure can change that review.
We also plan drainage behind the wall so wet-season water has a controlled path instead of building pressure against the blocks.

COVINGTON WORK
See How Hardscape Choices Change the Way a Yard Works
Paver patios, walkways, retaining walls and turf can solve different problems within the same property. These examples show how material choice, grading and layout can turn awkward or underused areas into cleaner, more functional outdoor spaces.

Covington Neighborhoods We Serve
We serve homeowners throughout Covington, including established neighborhoods and newer residential areas around the city.
CREATING A TIMELESS LANDSCAPE
Good outdoor spaces still work years after the project is finished. We plan hardscape proportions, drainage and connected features together so the yard does not feel pieced together one project at a time.
ARTIFICIAL TURF
Use Turf Where Natural Grass Is the Weak Link
Artificial turf can make sense in dog runs, narrow side yards and high-use areas where natural grass turns thin or muddy.
The important part is underneath. The base needs to drain, stay stable and meet the surrounding hardscape cleanly so water does not collect along an edge.
When turf is part of a larger patio or retaining-wall project, planning the elevations together usually produces a cleaner transition and fewer drainage surprises.

ADD-ONS
Plan the Extras Before the Pavers Go Down
Fire features, seating, lighting and kitchen utilities are easier to place while the hardscape is still being designed. That keeps finished pavers from being cut or removed later.
Seat Walls
Use a low wall to define the patio edge and add permanent seating without taking up floor space.
Fire Pits & Fire Tables
Set the fire feature location early so seating distance, fuel source and circulation are part of the patio layout.
Outdoor Lighting
Run conduit before the base is closed so path, step and wall lighting can be installed without reopening finished work.
Outdoor Kitchens
Reserve enough room for counters, appliances and working clearance, then coordinate utilities before installation.

PROJECT PROCESS
From First Site Visit to Final Walkthrough
A Covington project starts with the property itself. We look at how water moves, where vehicles and people need access, where the grade changes and whether city review could affect the design.
STEP 01
Walk the Site
Measure the work area, identify access limits and talk through what is not working now.
STEP 02
Shape the Plan
Set the footprint, elevations, materials and any connected walls, turf or outdoor features.
STEP 03
Check Covington Requirements
Review retaining-wall permit triggers, driveway conditions, trees and other site constraints that affect the build.
STEP 04
Build and Review
Prepare the base, install the project, clean the site and walk the finished work with you.
COVINGTON FAQS
Covington Hardscape Questions
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Covington?
Usually not when the wall is no more than four feet high from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall and it does not support a surcharge. A shorter wall can still need review when it holds back sloped soil, supports vehicle loads or carries another added load.
Can a driveway affect the rest of my hardscape plan?
Yes. Covington regulates driveway access and placement. On a single detached home, a driveway crossing a required setback or landscaped area is generally limited to 20 feet in width. The driveway should be planned before adjoining walkways, planting beds or future patio phases.
Can I remove trees to make room for a patio or driveway?
Covington regulates significant-tree removal. Some removals are exempt, but other work needs a minor or major tree-removal permit. We flag trees early so the layout can be checked before excavation begins.
How do you plan drainage around a paver patio in Covington?
We set grades and base elevations so water has a planned path away from the house and finished hardscape. When a wall, driveway or turf area connects to the patio, those elevations need to work together.
Can I replace a concrete driveway with pavers?
Often, yes. The new driveway still needs a vehicle-rated base, proper edge restraint and a compliant connection to the street. Existing grades and drainage should be checked before demolition starts.
Should a fire pit or lighting be part of the first patio design?
Yes when you already know you want them. Planning fuel lines, conduit, clearances and seating before pavers are installed avoids reopening the finished surface later.
Which Covington neighborhoods do you serve?
Kairos serves homeowners throughout Covington, including Timberlane, Covington Park, Covington Firs, Victorian Meadows, Pioneer Ridge, Rainier Vista, Winterwood and the Jenkins Creek area.

Two Covington Rules Can Change the Plan Early
Retaining-wall height and tree removal are two local issues worth checking before the hardscape footprint is final.
01 / RETAINING WALLS
Four Feet Is Not Just the Exposed Wall Height
Maple Valley treats permeable pavement as impervious when it applies the Surface Water Design Manual's thresholds and exemptions. Permeable pavers can still help with water movement, but they don't remove the project from those threshold calculations.
02 / TREE REMOVAL
Some Tree Removal Needs City Review Before Excavation
A landmark tree needs a permit before removal. Trees planted or retained under an approved plan, tree protection area or other development condition can also require a permit regardless of their current size.
4 ft
General retaining-wall permit threshold, measured footing to top.
20 ft.
Typical maximum driveway width when a single-family driveway crosses required setbacks or landscaping.
< 1 acre
Minor tree-removal permit category when regulated removal is not exempt.
1+ acre
Major tree-clearing permit category when regulated removal is not exempt.
Requirements can change by parcel, critical areas, right-of-way conditions and project scope. Confirm current City of Covington requirements during planning.
